August 1943 Born in Coimbatore –the last of the family of ten siblings.
1952-58 High
schools in Coimbatore, Pudukkottai and Madras (Chennai)
1959 Passed Pre
University Course from Loyola College, Nungambakkam, Chennai and was selected
for B. E and got into Guindy- after a month doing B. Sc in Presidency College, Madras.
First batch of five-year integrated B. E. Course.
1964 Out of
Guindy - accelerated push due to 1962 border trouble and landed in Electricity Board at
Uttiramerur, Chingleput till 1965. Encouraged by my old roommate R. Ravindran to apply to
Indian Institute of Science, Resigned from EB and joined Aeronautics Dept of
I.I.Sc. in August 1965 for M. E. in Aircraft Structures.
After completion
of M.E.( and also become a better tennis, billiards and bridge player), was
selected in the I batch of Management Trainee in Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd and
posted to Nasik division and worked there in the MiG 21 programmmes until 1977; and transferred to Bangalore
Aircraft Design Bureau till 1986 and then to the Helicopter Design Bureau and
Helicopter division from where retired
as Deputy General Manager in 2002.During this sojourn, had the opportunity to
work closely with Soviet and later German engineers in various projects. In the
last phase of service, was totally immersed in various upgradations of engine,
weapon systems, avionics and navigation systems of western and Russian
helicopters of the Indian armed forces.
Had a rich
extracurricular life – what with composing crosswords for a local weekly ;
playing serious bridge and representing the state at the nationals for more
than 10 years and being state level champion ; and also translating Russian
technical literature to English for a
lot of concerns.
Married in 1970
to Abida from Malaysia and blessed
with two daughters ( one a M.E. in
computer Science in Bangalore and the
other selling computer products in
Dubai)married and with two children each; and
a son , who , after B.E
from NIT, Trichy, and M.E. from
Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, did
his Ph. D in Electrical Engineering from
University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign and worked in Texas Instruments at Dallas , Texas.
During our visit to the stat in 2008, was involved in a serious motor accident on the freeway in Dallas, in
which both my wife and son lost their lives and I was seriously injured and
spent nearly eighty days in hospital and rehabilitation centre and returned to
Bangalore , where I am staying ever since.
